It’s the time of the year when you start planning your holiday parties. You and your partner may also make plans to watch your favorite holiday movies. The ones that you look forward to watching every year. These can be the same movies that you have watched since childhood or something new and modern. As a couples therapist in Atlanta, Georgia, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite holiday movies and why the values in these movies are important to me.
#1 It’s a Wonderful Life
“It’s a Wonderful Life” is a classic holiday movie that is rerun every year. It’s an emotional movie about reflection on life and the importance of our lives. When George Bailey is about to give up on life, the guardian angel Clarence shows him what his town would have been like if he had never existed. Through this journey, George learns he realizes how important his role in the lives of his family and friends has been.
It’s a great reminder that your life matters and the things you do make an impact, even if you don’t think they do. It also carries the value that the importance of family and marriage is priceless. That as a couple, your support and love for each other is a strength to be counted on. Then as a parent, you support and guide your children as they grow.
#2 This Christmas
“This Christmas” is a wonderful movie that comes with a lot of drama, laughs, and lessons. It’s a story about an entire family coming together for the holidays and discovering that families are not all perfect. Sometimes there are secrets and problems that can only be navigated by talking about it and going to therapy. It is a great reminder that as family members, we need to break the cycle of silence and find ways to work through our issues.
As a couples therapist in Atlanta, GA I also want to emphasize the importance of talking about your issues before it becomes a problem. This can be you and your partner before integrating your families through marriage, or the entire family itself. This way, none of the issues are too overwhelming and can be worked through with understanding before including other family members.
#3 The Pact
“The Pact” is a beautiful movie about love and friendship. It follows the story of two childhood friends who grow up with a promise in their hearts. When one of them is about to get married, the other one is reminded of the pact they made in childhood. The importance of promises between loved ones, especially those we love and trust, is a great value to remember.
At times, commitments can be difficult and put us out of our comfort zone but they are made with the intention of protecting our relationships and the ones we love. As couples, whether you are married or not, it’s important to remember these commitments and keep that as the foundation of your relationship. Keeping you both grounded and focused whenever you go through tough times.
#4 Die Hard
“Die Hard” is a Christmas classic, that we often debate about in my own home, whether it is or isn’t a Christmas movie. The debate is fun but what I love about this movie is that it provides us a break from the other holiday movies and traditions. It gives us the opportunity to still enjoy Christmas but with a twist. This movie reminds us that it’s okay to have fun and enjoy a good old-fashioned action movie. It also gives us a break from all the Hallmark movies and cheesy plots that we may have seen too many times. Or have been watching since the countdown to Christmas began.
The holidays are a time to spend with family, friends, and loved ones. So why not enjoy a movie that speaks to the values you find important? However, throw in a movie with a bit of action for good measure and entertainment. It’s a great way to mix things up and still enjoy the holiday season. Overall, no matter which movie you choose, it’s a good reminder to enjoy the season with those you love.
