Too often, before clients come through my door they’ve already tried dedicating themselves more fully to prayer and spiritual practice. They’ve handed their anxiety to God. And this IS a good thing. HE is powerful. Yet, our anxiety and emotional pain is real and God has provided us with resources to turn to in order to heal. That includes therapy and other supportive professionals.
Alternatively, I’ve seen clients who turn inward for the solution. Maybe they exercise to the point where it’s almost unhealthy. Or, they use very restrictive diets to cope with their internal struggles. I’ve even seen people come to therapy once a week hoping it will be a “fix all.” But if therapy only takes place one hour per week out of one hundred and sixty eight hours, then the healing process is not complete. Let’s be honest, in order for therapy to be effective these other components should be applied and the techniques taught in therapy should be used all week long.
The truth is, the best solution lies in a holistic approach. We must draw on our faith and spiritual practice while also engaging in evidence-based therapy, lifestyle management and self-care to heal. This integrated approach holds the promise of true transformation and lasting relief from anxiety.
